My research seeks to understand the interplay between extension and volcanism within the Colorado River Extensional Corridor (CREC) by studying the spectacular exposures of Miocene Volcanic and Sedimentary rock in the Whipple Mountains and surrounding ranges

Relationship between volcanism and extension in the CREC Preliminary work has shown that volcanism began no earlier than ~21Ma and voluminous outpourings persisted until a significant extensional event at ~19 Ma. This new data provides important new age constraints on volcanism in this region and is consistent with thermal weakening of the crust playing a role in the onset of local extension.
